Welcome!
Hello! You've come to the homepage of A/Prof Ann Kwan. My lab is focused on solving interesting biological problems using a cross-disciplinary approach especially in the field of fighting antimicrobial resistance.
The research areas we work on include: engineering biocompatible and antimicrobial coatings for implants using functional amyloids, drug and tool molecule development to fight antimicrobial resistance and developing new strategies to allow early detection and identification of infectious diseases.
Techniques range from molecular biology, protein chemistry, biophysics, structural biology, computational biology, molecular docking to omics.
We have opportunities for highly capable and motivated students.
LAB NEWS
At the A-RNA24 conference, Jameel was awarded a poster on using AI models and computational techniques to investigate and classify RNA-binding proteins with the aim of identifying potential inhibitors.
Due to the discovery of extensive asbestos during G08 renovations, the Kwan/Ataide lab along with all G08 research labs have temporarily moved to various locations on campus.
Esther and Sienna were each awarded a Faculty of Science Hons and ANISE Pathway Scholarships totaling $10,000.
Sydney Nano's Taste of Research Awards ($2500) are awarded to high-calibre undergraduate coursework students to undertake nanoscience research.
Ann was one of 12 researchers from USyd selected to participate in the inaugural Inventor Mentorship Program run by the Sydney Knowledge Hub.
Jessica, a postdoc with Sandro, has been a close collaborator with the Kwan lab on the antimicrobial development project. Jessica has just been awarded $50k to work on our collaboration on PNAs.
Esther has the Sydney Nano's Taste of Research Awards ($2500) to investigate whether modified RNAs have potential as stable RNA decoys for next-generation biotech tools and therapeutics. Many congratulations Esther!
Maddy has won the 2022 ANSTO’s Neutron and Deuteration Impact Awards (https://www.ansto.gov.au/whats-on/anstos-neutron-and-deuteration-impact-awards) for her work in the expression and purification of isotopically labelled proteins as part of the novel antimicrobial development project.
The Greg Ralston Memorial Prize sponsored by The Sydney Protein Group is a $500 travel award for a BSc (Hons) student who plans to continue to a PhD. Well done Maddy and a great looking poster!
The Kwan lab was showcased at ISS 2022 which is an intensive program during the winter break for Year 11 and 12 students to experience STEM at university. A live-streamed lab tour featuring Ann, Tom, Esther, Feiyun, Lou, Aston and collaborator Sandro along with research techniques and facilities was showcased.
